The Materials Research Society (MRS) announced the winners of the Graduate Student Awards on Wednesday, April 11, during the 2012 MRS Spring Meeting in San Francisco. Twenty-three graduate students were recognized for their academic achievements and current materials research, which exhibit a high level of excellence and distinction. Once a week, Katie Geddes starts her morning meandering the paths of Grant Park and Zoo Atlanta on a horse belonging to the Atlanta Police Department (APD).
Geddes is a member of Georgia Tech’s club equestrian team and, along with fellow teammates Jennifer Bateman and Alynn Lecznar, was inducted last week as an honorary member of the APD’s mounted patrol. The three women comprise the second group of inductees from Tech’s equestrian team since 2010.

Recent earthquake damage has exposed the vulnerability of existing structures to strong ground movement. At the Georgia Institute of Technology, researchers are analyzing shape-memory alloys for their potential use in constructing seismic-resistant structures.

By looking to Mother Nature for solutions, researchers have identified a promising new binder material for lithium-ion battery electrodes that could not only boost energy storage, but also eliminate the use of toxic compounds now used in manufacturing the components.

Robert L. Snyder, professor and co-chair of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech, passed away on Sept. 1 after a long battle with cancer. He was 70.
Snyder was known for building bridges between nanotechnology, biology, medicine, chemistry, materials science and engineering throughout his career.

Using barium oxide nanoparticles, researchers have developed a self-cleaning technique that could allow solid oxide fuel cells to be powered directly by coal gas at operating temperatures as low as 750 degrees Celsius. The technique could provide a cleaner and more efficient alternative to conventional power plants for generating electricity from the nation's vast coal reserves.
